Ayurveda and Climate Change

I was talking with some friends recently about Ayurveda and how the use of its knowledge has shifted due to our crazy weather patterns. On the surface, climate change would seem to really throw off a science based on the seasons and elemental patterns, but in the bigger picture, Ayurveda is really the most effective lens we can use to continue to balance when it is snowing in April, or steaming in March.

Balance day to day

Ayurveda is a way for us to get to know ourselves and the world around us in the most subtle ways; from the elements of our food to the activities we need to balance our mental health. When we think about ourselves in a world of climate change, I’m sure we can see how our inner landscapes aren’t always so stable either! So what can we do?

We need empty time and space in our schedule (especially in the morning) to check in with ourselves and give ourselves time to experience the subtleties of our inner and outer landscapes.

We can sit and notice how the air feels today, temperature and quality, and then decide on the foods and activities that can support our personal dosha’s response to the weather. While we sit quietly we can also notice the quality of our mental/spiritual state, how quickly are our thoughts passing, what is the main idea from our thoughts this morning, and how can I balance with this information.

Being in tune with your own experience, and then applying the information of Ayurveda, is going to be infinitely helpful. Especially because our inner and outer world can change daily!

Sensitivity of our 5 senses

Ayurveda is a way we can be constantly learning and discovering how to interact with ourselves and the world as we (and our world) changes and grows. We can ebb and flow with the rhythm and chaos of our natural world as long as we are attuned to and developing our sense organs. (eyes, ears, mouth, nose, skin) These are the most tangible ways we are receiving information and subtleties from the world around us, and they can become even stronger and sensitive the more we are cognitively connected to the information they are giving us. Let me give you an example.

Pulse Reading in Ayurveda

Ayurveda originally diagnosed ailments simply through pulse reading. There are still a few practitioners with this ability, but overall it is becoming more and more rare. Why? Because it takes time and patience to train our sense of touch to be able to understand the quality of the pulse and where exactly in each fingertip we are feeling it. This information can tell us which organs are affected and how. So much subtlety passes through our pulse, and there is a way to understand it all, just through our fingertips, but we have to be sensitive enough to feel it.

De-colonizing how we experience our thoughts

The same goes for all our senses. Ayurveda is an avenue to understand your imbalances through each sense, we just have to learn and train ourselves so we can understand how.

I hope this inspires you to tune into your 5 senses and notice what your body is telling you. This is a way to de-centralize and de-colonize how we are thinking, from the brain center to all the facilities of the body. When we integrate ourselves, we can live fully and be able to balance in each minute. This is what climate change is demanding from preventative care.
